Question 1

To round a number to a certain decimals places,

1. Count along from the decimal point to find where you are going to ‘cut off’ the number.

2. Look at the digit immediately to the right of the boundary (ignore any further on)

 If this digit is 4 or less just remove everything after the boundary.

 If this digit is 5 or more increase the last digit before the boundary by one and remove everything after the boundary.

In the following questions, round the following decimals to the given number of decimal places.

a)

Round the following decimals to the nearest whole number (0 decimal places):

213.43=Round your answer to the nearest integer.Expected answer:

441.57=Round your answer to the nearest integer.Expected answer:

If it is 5 or more, round up, otherwise round down.

To round to a whole number you look at the first decimal place to determine whether you round up or down. If the first decimal place is a 5 or more then you round up (increase the units column by 1) and discard the decimals. If the first decimal 4 or less then you round down (leave the units column as it is) and discard the decimals.

For example:

123.49 is 123 to the nearest whole number
123.5 is 124 to the nearest whole number

Note: we only look at the first decimal place when rounding to whole numbers (the others are irrelevant). For example, 123.4998 is still rounded to 123.

If it is 5 or more, round up, otherwise round down.

Since we are told to round to two decimal places we look at the third decimal place to determine if we round up or down. If the third decimal place is a 5 or more then you round up (increase the second decimal place by 1) and discard the digits to the right. If the third decimal place is 4 or less then you round down (leave the second decimal place as it is) and discard the digits to the right.

For example:

123.3461 is 123.35 to 2 decimal places
123.5735 is 123.57 to 2 decimal places
123.995 is 124.00 to 2 decimal places
