The horned lizard Phrynosoma mcallii has spikes on its head that are thought to protect them
from predation. One of their predators, the loggerhead shrike, Lanius ludovicianus, saves
prey for later by skewering its victims on thorns. Researchers took advantage of this
gruesome behaviour to compare horn length in eaten (‘depredated’) horned lizards to horn
length in lizards that are alive and well. The results for the two samples are summarised in
this table:
