Horizontal lines on distance-time graphs are when the subject is stationary. Lines with a positive gradient are heading away from the starting point, and lines with a negative gradient are heading towards the starting point.

You calculate the speed of a section of a distance-time graph by finding the gradient of that section. Remember gradient = difference in y / difference in x. This is the same as saying speed = distance / time.
