The sides of a rectangle are altered. The length is increased by $\var{numberone}$ % while the width is decreased by $\var{numbertwo}$ %. Find the precentage change in the area of the rectangle stating whether it is an increase or a decrease, by indicating a decrease with a negative sign.

(e.g. -8% shows an 8% decrease, and 8% shows an 8% increase)

If the length is increased by $\var{numberone}$ %, the length becomes $\var{lent}$

Similiarly with the width,

If the width is decreased by $\var{numbertwo}$ %, the width becomes $\var{width}$

multiply length by width to get area:

$\var{lent} \times \var{width} = \var{area}$

Then, multiply the area by 100 to get it as a percentage

To see if it is a decrease or increase, take away 100 from it

If it is a negative number it is a decrease, and if a positive number it increases.
