For example, $250 000$ .

Starting with the decimal point at the far right, i.e. $250 000.0$ , count how many places to move to the left to get $2.5$ - this is five places so you can write $250 000$ as $2.5 \times 10^5$ .

For small numbers, for example $0.00045$ , count how many places you need to move the decimal place to the right to get $4.5$ - it's four places so you can write $0.00045$ as $4.5 \times 10^{-4}$
