Advice

When multipling using decimals

When multipling using decimals, count how many decimal places you need to move the number to make it a whole number e.g

0.000054 to get to 54, we moved 6 decimal places and 0.004 to get to 4, we moved 3 decimal places

So if we want to do $0.000054 \times 0.004$ => we move the first number 6 decimal places and the second number 3 decimal places

=> $54 \times 4 = 216$

Now since we moved 9 decimal places, altogether to the right, we move the answer 9 decimals places back to the left i.e.

216 becomes 0.000000216

When dividing using decimals

Keep multiplying both numbers by 10 until the number you are dividing by becomes a whole number. Then carry out a division as normal, keeping the position of any decimal points e.g.

If we want to do $25.348 \div 0.04$ this is the same as $253.48 \div 0.4$ (multiply both by 10), which is the same as $2534.8 \div 4$ (multiply both by 10 again).

Completing the division and maintaining the position of the decimal point gives $\begin{array}{r}633.7 \\ {4}\overline{)2534.8} \end{array}$
