This question had an unwieldy part b), asking the student to simplify an expression containing many log terms. This was set up in an extraordinarily complicated way with over a dozen variables and, as I'm sure we have other similar questions written in a less complex way, I have removed it and reorganised part a) to become two parts. The question is very straightforward now, but I think that's OK.

The label on the slider says "p = ..." - what's p?

I've changed the parts so:

  • part a always has two negative roots
  • part b always has one positive root and one negative
  • part c is the difference of two squares.

I don't think there was any point in the version which had a constant on the RHS.

I've added a marking script to check that the student's answer is factorised, rather than using string restrictions.
