Material created by students working with the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics E-Learning Unit at Newcastle University over the summer of 2017, to support students making the transition from school to university.

Christian Lawson-Perfect on Using compound units - speed 8 years, 4 months ago

Saved a checkpoint:

Split off from a larger question.

Heavily edited the advice to make sure no weird rounding errors happen, and fixed a fair bit of grammar.

The question now picks a physically reasonable speed and generates a time based on that.

Saved a checkpoint:

Set up the randomisation again so that all numbers are integers.

In part a, the $x$ coefficient of the second equation is a multiple of the coefficient in the first equation.

In part b, the LCMs of the $x$ and $y$ coefficients are strictly larger than any of the coefficients.

Part of a larger question. I've reorganised, given the unit conversion table to the student, and added steps.

Saved a checkpoint:

I've set expected variable names for the parts with more than one variable.

Christian Lawson-Perfect on Factorising Quadratic Equations with $x^2$ Coefficients Greater than 1 8 years, 4 months ago

Saved a checkpoint:

Removed a lot of rubbish which must have come from a previous question, and renamed the variables so they make sense.

It's important that the coefficients of $x$ in the two factors aren't the same - otherwise, the order of the factorisation would be ambiguous.

Chris Graham commented on Converting units of length (km/m/miles) 8 years, 4 months ago

Split from a larger question on converting units. I've tidied the advice, reorganised the part, used the random names extension and added a bit more context.

Christian Lawson-Perfect on Transformation - Enlargement 8 years, 4 months ago

Saved a checkpoint:

Not massively happy with this - the centre of enlargement is always $(0,0)$ and the scale factor is always $\pm 2$.

The diagrams aren't very precisely drawn either.

I've reworded the advice so it actually gives the answers.

Saved a checkpoint:

I've reworded a few things, replace the list of (all-male) famous people with the random names extension, and put the "identify the constant term" part above the "write down the constant term" part.
